Annotated Bibliography Autumn

•I found this research to be particularly interesting: It was good to know if a source was credible or not, the CRAAP test was quite helpful.
•This part of my annotated bibliography was surprisingly difficult: The CRAAP test as some points was difficult because I wasn't always sure if I was finding enough information to know if it was a credible source or not.
•Next time I would do this differently: Next time I would definitely start the assignment sooner so I had more time to really dig deep and figure things out a little better. I knew it was time consuming but it was a lot more time consuming than I thought it would be.

•I found this part of my paper to be particularly interesting: I thought it was interesting how many different foods you can get specific nutrients from for one single nutrient.
•This part was surprisingly difficult: Trying to come up with the other side, arguments against my argument.
•Next time I would do this differently: Try to format my paper with topics before I start writing the paper then go off of those to write it, instead of just jumping in and writing the paper.

Summary:
This article is about an experiment that was done in a double blind controlled trial, there were 95 middle aged managers involved in the experiment. One group was taking dietary supplements and the other was in a placebo condition. The point of the experiment was to see how the dietary supplements may or may not have improved quality of life. In the end they decided for those on a poor diet, dietary supplements may improve their quality of life health wise.
Assess:
This source is useful and reliable. The researchers were from the Psychology Department at London University and Birkbeck College. The publisher is a company called Springer which specializes in writing journals, articles and books about science, technology and medicine. They have some of the best scientists in the world writing for them. The article is objective because it evaluates the two different angles. The point of this article is to find out how dietary supplementation affects the quality of life.
Reflection:
I think this could be helpful in my argument but it’s a fairly short journal so there wasn’t quite as much information there as I would have hoped. It didn’t exactly change my views about supplements because I tend to stick with being “natural” instead of using supplements to help my body.

Summary:
This article is a question and answer page about dietary supplements. It talks about the benefits, such as helping you get a good intake of nutrients but explains that it doesn't replace those specific foods you need in your diet, like fruits and vegetables maybe. It also talks about some possible risks that could come with these supplements, such as, biological effects to the body. It's kind of warning us not to do/ take supplements with certain things, instead of prescriptions or too much of something can be bad as well.
Assess:
This source might be on the edge of being able to use it. It's hard to find information about the author but the FDA is who wrote it, which is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA is responsible for protecting public health by assuring the safety of things such as veterinary drugs and supplements. This article is objective because it gives both angles from which the supplements could be viewed. The point of this article is to let people know the different effects a supplement can bring to you and what to do if you want to find out more information on a specific supplement or what to do if something goes wrong.
Reflection:
I think this would be helpful in my paper because it gives the risks that go along with taking supplements. It also gives some good information on who's responsible for the safety of dietary supplements. It didn't change my views but there was definitely some helpful information that I could use from this.

Summary:
This article is all about the side effects of dietary and workout supplements. It explains how even if the bottle may say "natural" that doesn't mean it is anywhere near natural and it can easily fool people. It talks about how the risk of liver damage is a big reason why most drugs are removed from the market and the reason new drugs don't get approved in the first place. A supplement called Ephedra was talked about and how it caused many supplements to be banned if they contained this in them.
Assess:
I believe this source is reliable because it is written from the perspective of Lawyers at a law firm. They're the top 100 in the U.S. for Civil Plaintiff Law. Also, Gibson was selected as one of Houston's top lawyers. There is no date on when it was published so that's a possible red flag and there are no extra links to go to so I assume this is all knowledge from the people working at the law firm that they seem to just know. So now looking at those two things, I'm not so sure this is a reliable source. There's some credible things about it and some that seem like they could be false knowledge possibly.
Reflection:
There is some good information in this article but it's hard to know if it's a credible source or not. It seems like it would be coming from a well known lawyer, but then again, it might just be his knowledge and not necessarily professional knowledge because there are no links to any other cites. I might use this in my paper because it seems like some good information.

Summary:
This article first starts out describing what a dietary supplement is and what it contains. Then it goes on to talk about the difference between dietary supplements, food and drugs. The FDA regulates dietary supplements as being regulated different then food and drugs, it depends on what the manufacturer puts on the product label. The article talks about how supplements are regulated in more ways then just the label claims, like either refusing or agreeing to allow certain ingredients into the supplements.
Assess:
I found this website to be reliable because the links attached to it were all good credible sources. Also it was written by the National Institutes of Health which is our nations research medical agency. They are made up with twenty-seven institutes and centers each having their own specific focus. So I found they're a very good source to go off of because their information is scientific and not biased at all.
Reflection:
I think this would be helpful in my paper because it gives many links to other sources in case I need to further evaluate or research in a certain area. It talks about the claims manufacturers make so this can be used in my paper to back up my argument.

Paroske, Marcus. "Overcoming Burdens of Proof in Science Regulation: Ephedra and the FDA." Project MUSE. N.p., 2012. Web. 14 Feb. 2014.

Summary:
This article uses a real life example about a famous baseball players death to show what dietary supplements can do to you. Turns out the supplement had ephedra in it which is a botanical supplement. His death is what intensified the controversy whether or not they should ban ephedra from all supplements or not. The article goes on to talk about how after this happened the FDA was charged with "protecting the public from dangerous supplements." Turns out this was said to be unfair because the FDA had been regulating against ephedra use in supplements for eight years prior to the incident. Eventually the did get ephedra banned.
Assess:
I think this is a great and reliable article. The copyright was from the Michigan State University board of trustees. Marcus Paroske, the author of this article, is an assistant professor at the University of Michigan. There are also many reliable sources and links at the bottom of the article to go to for reference and more information about the topic involving ephedra. It's all factual which is good so it doesn't bring any biased opinions to the stage.
Reflection:
I definitely see myself using this when I begin writing my paper. I think it will be helpful because it backs up the side of the argument I'm coming from and helps show that supplements can be bad for you depending on what's in them. Also it's a little bit longer and I think I'll be able to get more information and examples to back up my arguments compared to some of the other articles I've read which seem to be repetitive of others. This one is new information and different from the rest.

Baker, Johnathan D. "Pills, Potions, Products: Kava's Transformations in New and Nontraditional Contexts." Project MUSE. N.p., 2012. Web. 14 Feb. 2014

Summary:
This article focuses mostly on kava which is used by present day Pacific Islanders for religious reasons, ceremonially and socially, it's considered a cash crop there. It didn't have the best view from the rest of the world but because it's in so many dietary supplements they wanted to make the world view of it better and more reassuring. So Baker goes on to describe observations he's made where kava has been present and shows more imagery than anything but then explains each image and why he chose to use that image to describe the advertisements that kava products were involved with.
Assess:
I find this journal very reliable. It is written by a man who is a professor at the University of Hawai'i, he has a PhD in medical anthropology which he earned based on his research about dietary supplements containing kava and his primary research focuses on nutrition, diet, and health and the overlap of medicine and food. It's very factual information and unbiased. There are many credible links at the end of his journal as well to refer to.
Reflection:
I plan to use this source because I know it's factual. It's basically exactly what I'm looking for with the overlap of food and medicine. It's a really long article which can be a downfall when trying to look for information but it showed me so much more about the other products associated with dietary supplements.

Young, Alison. "New Sports Supplement 'Frenzy' Draws Concern, Questions." USA Today. Gannett, 13 Feb. 2014. Web. 13 Feb. 2014.

Summary:
This article is about a new sports supplement called "Frenzy" which is the replacement supplement for "Craze" which scientist found was spiked with a methamphetamine-like compound. People who have used it so far say it is even more powerful then the original "Craze." They're trying to find out what's in it but the company producing it won't say. Matt Cahill is part of the company and has a history of putting risky products on the market. So basically this article talks about public concerns for this new product and why the FDA isn't reviewing it how they should be.
Assess:
This is a different source which I like, but all the information in it may not necessarily be full on facts because it's coming from USA Today. Some of it seems like it could be factual and some not. Because they're unsure of the product or what's in it it's hard to talk facts about it. There are some really good links throughout the article to back up the reasoning for the things the author has to say though and those links are very helpful. The material is biased in some parts because it has the public views and thoughts which can persuade readers to think one way rather than make up their own mind.
Reflection:
I would use some of this material because I think it would be a good example to use in my paper for an argument on the crazy things that can be snuck into supplements. I would just want to research a little further into some of the particular topics to make sure I'm getting the facts and not just opinions.
