Arguing Cause- SH

•I found this part of my paper to be particularly interesting: Putting my own experience in the fast food business and combining it with a statement I heard in "Super-Size Me" was pretty interesting. I was trained just how he stated in his documentary.
•This part was surprisingly difficult: Using fillers, I had all the facts in my paper that I wanted/could use, filling it out with my thoughts but not making it sound to casual was difficult.
•Next time I would do this differently: I would start by putting in my thoughts, and adding the facts that pertain to each thought at the end.

Argument: Fast food advertisement/products is a threat to children's nutrition and a major cause of the obesity in America.

Our nation is more concerned about other countries crisis's then our very own. Obesity is a problem that keeps growing, and is not slowing down. Multiple surveys have been done regarding the issue of obesity in children and adults in our society today, stating the problem is caused my fast food availability. There have been several possible causing contributions to our weight gain as a nation. Social media has a big role in the obesity epidemic, as well (as) poor nutrition and lack of exercise.

Fast food is a major part of many American’s diets today. The cheaply priced food, and the easy availability of their food did not seem like a threat to our society; many people still do not see it as one. However, The United States is the fattest nation in the world and nearly 100 million Americans are overweight or obese. Many health problems like diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, colon cancer, have been linked to the poor diets Americans have been in taking. Obesity is now the second cause of preventable death in America (Spurlock).

So what makes fast food so bad? Well the cheap, fatty food portions have almost everything to do with it. Portions have increase by triple within the last decade, and upselling is actually taught to many employees, including myself (Spurlock). During my short period at working at Hot Dog on a Stick, we would practice several times a day during training to persuade each customer to buy a bigger size. If we went through a sell without attempting to upsell we were scolded, and if we kept forgetting we were made to switch to cooker.

Society has made obesity acceptable. Smokers are constantly publically hectored for their poor smoking habits, but when will it be socially acceptable to hector overweight/obese people. We have accepted their unhealthy habits, and even modify things for their “needs”. For examples, Drink holders have actually be modified to be bigger to fit larger cups. A “Big Gulp” from seven eleven can hold about 64 oz., which is a ½ gallon. Fill that will soda, and you have about 1600 calories, and 48 teaspoons of sugar (Spurlock). That's only 400 calories short of a normal calorie intake for the whole day! (careful here — are overweight people the only people that drink big gulps or need bigger drink holders?)

American(')s inactivity is also a major contributor to our obesity epidemic. Americans are becoming lazier as each year comes and goes. We now have machines that we rely on during grocery shopping or a trip to (the) mall to sit on just because we are tired of walking. An average person in American walks about 5000 steps a day, but doesn’t even come close to the physical activity needed to be considered healthy. More than 60% of Americans don’t get any exercise each day (Spurlock). Why is it so hard for people to get up and move? Time management could be a reason, but mostly (it is because of) procrastination.

During a survey done in the state of Minnesota, the surveyors recorded the amount of fast food restaurants within a 2 mile radius of their home and work. The results were 39 restaurants near their home and 94 near their work address (Jeffery). Each day about 1 in 4 Americans visit a fast food restaurant (Spurlock). However the problem is not only national, it is global. Humans are growing bigger everywhere, but America is the most severe.

Fast food advertisements have been targeting children for a long period of time, luring them in with “cool” toys, happy meals, and jungle-gym facilities to play at if they go to their establishment (Schlosser). The amount of overweight children has doubled since 1980 and tripled in adolescents. Different media can also be factor as kids no longer want to play outside but to play on their tablets, or computers (Spurlock). Technology has been advancement to us, but also provides entertainment that we once didn’t have. Having children play outside has become more and more of a struggle each day. T.V shows, and documentaries like, "Super-Size Me" have been made to make more Americans aware are huge problem we have. Some videos are horrifying to watch. Even though some television shows the hard evidence of the most obese people in our country, they use the problem for entertainment instead of awareness.

The obesity epidemic is a problem that many have (do) not acknowledge or even care about. Media fuels the fire, Fast food establishments are making the problem worse, and people are just not motivated to be physically active. This problem is growing not only in American but across the world. Obesity can be preventable, and reversed but it takes motivation which many lack.
