Chapter 1 Alex

Even though most people in this generation don't read as often as the previous generations, we still write and read more than they ever did because of social media. Higher education has two purposes: to communicate and to create knowledge. We are here to practice skills that are necessary to do certain things in the future. Well educated people make decisions carefully and take their time studying an issue from multiple points of view. They also learn to carefully explain and support their conclusions for others to scrutinize. Thinking like a scholar can make you more successful in college.
Format for academic writing: pick a topic, read through sources, create an outline and write the first draft, revise edit and submit the paper. Sometimes you must repeat the steps. Experienced writers don't write the same way every time. Check paragraphs to make sure they make sense and stay on topic. The term argument signifies a tool that helps us explain what and why we think. Rhetoric is the investigation of how persuasion and communication work. Scholars think of reading and writing as social activities.
To write with a purpose you should; analyze- take something apart and see how it works, evaluate or critique- judge something according to established criteria, interpret- examine somethings meaning, implications, or significance. You must sometimes over-explain what you are writing about. An argument purpose depends on the audience, it can be aimed at a professor or for your classmates, it can also be for someone else depending on your paper.
