Rules of Communication-?

Backpacks and Briefcases

-you are constantly analyzing and making assumptions
-People have a mental database of what they see and what they expect
-media makes rhetorical analysis important
-Rhetoric-The way we use language and images to persuade
-"Wherever there is persuasion, there is rhetoric. And wherever there is 'meaning' there is 'persuasion.'-Kenneth Burke, rhetorician
-Rhetoric is always in a specific situation or context
-Can be difficult to understand all of the exigence and restraints
-have to question the writer to see if they are credible
-Asking questions helps you understand what the rhetor is trying to say
-Logos-Arguments from reason
-Logos provide the facts
-Pathos-Arguments that deal with emotion
-Pathos are effective if the rhetor has to convince the audience in a short amount of time
-Pathos are common in commercials
-ethos-arguments from ethics
-ethos relate to the credibility of the rhetor
-The tone of the essay has to be appropriate to the context and audience
-Advertisers place ads in places to target a specific audience
-Exigence is problem marked by urgency
-Kairos-Time/context, culture, place, anything outside of the speech itself
-Telos-The purpose, very similar to the exigence
Group Discussion:

  • He was trying to tone down the rioting
  • Didn't want the assassination to be a catalyst for more hatred, but to have it be a remembrance to continue the values that MLK stood for.
  • He wanted unity to all ethnicities
  • He used his high political standing as a Senator to strengthen his opinions
  • Logos- Said alot of things that MLK said in order to continue his message
  • Said that his brother was also murdered by a white person, was trying to focus on the act instead of the race

Research tips

Use google scholar to filter out non-scholar articles
try to find the full paper if abstract is interesting/don't use abstract as the source
use pubmed it has scientific publications that are peer-reviewed journals
pubmed is a very difficult read and speak in very scientific terms

Annotated Bibliography

Paragraph 1-summary, put down the facts of the source, no opinions
Paragraph 2- CRAAP test, see if it's a good source.
Paragraph 3- Decide if you want to use the source, this is the time to put in your opinions.

Debate video

The first argument for government being involved for obesity was very factual but was boring.

The first argument against it was very lively and was using the fear of totalitarianism and the money being spent on managing obesity. Says that BMI is a terrible index to how obesity is measured. Says government can't control personal choices.

The second argument for it was very spirited and caught my attention right away. She brought up a lot of words that people are in favor of and related it back to government being involved with obesity. Says that the government wants to work together with the public and not "food police". Says they want to educate and have people make better choices.

The second argument against it said that the entire debate was set up to have his side on the losing edge. Says that the obesity debate is the same as government trying to get rid of different body states. Says that it's very difficult for people to change their body weight for the long term. Says that there isn't enough data to make informed decisions.
