Project Proposal Hamnes

What societal problem or problems have you identified while researching your topic?
Due to the drinking age being 21, college campus drinking has become dangerous behind closed doors.

What are the causes of this problem? Was it intentional? Are there extenuating circumstances?
Since people under 21 can't drink legally, they drink at parties without supervision and don't learn how to drink responsibly.

What can we do about it? Is there any action that can be taken to change this? What action has been already attempted to address this problem? Why wasn't it successful?
If we lowered the drinking age, and taught younger people how to drink responsibly, there would be less binge drinking and young people wouldn't need to hide their drinking without supervision. There are many people who have been trying to propose making the age lower, including the Choose Responsibly group founded by former Middlebury College President John McCardell.

AFTER CONFERENCE

In what ways is this thesis and topic challenging (p.108)?
This thesis and topic is challenging because it is a very debatable topic. A lot of people disagree with this including students. It's also challenging because there are reasons and good support for me to be compelled to agree with the other side.

How is this thesis and topic compelling (p.108)?
This topic is compelling because the drinking age used to be 18, and the negative effects of students drinking secretly including all of the deaths and sexual assaults that have happened.

In what ways is this thesis and topic debatable or controversial (p. 109)?
This thesis is debatable because a lot of people think that the drinking age should stay the same due to less traffic accidents and immaturity of the brain. On the other hand, a lot of people say the less traffic accidents is due to more strict traffic laws, and it is becoming increasingly dangerous for college students to drink secretly with no supervision.
