Project Proposal Paris

Before Conference:

What societal problem or problems have you identified while researching your topic?

After researching my topic of synthetic drugs, I have realize that this is a problem that is overlooked way too often. I have come across many articles that talk about deaths caused by synthetic drugs. One of the main reasons this is even a problem is because those to distribute these synthetic drugs can do so without their product being illegal. Once the government bans one drug, the makers of the synthetic drugs change the chemical makeup of the drug slightly so it is undetectable and now technically legal. Also, synthetic drugs are package in "fun" ways that wouldn't raise suspicion. The packages sometimes even say "not for human consumption" so that there is no suspicion. The government seems to be scrambling to make all synthetic drugs illegal but just can't seem to get around all of the loopholes.

What are the causes of this problem? Was it intentional? Are there extenuating circumstances?

The causes of the problem is those who are distributing and selling these synthetic drugs because they are making a fortune and have no reason to stop. This problem is definitely intentional because those who make the synthetic drugs change the make up of the drugs once their current drug has become illegal. I believe that there are some extenuating circumstances because in one of my sources, the maker and distributor of a synthetic drug recognized his packaging in a case where two young boys had died from taking his drug. He confessed and was sentenced to time in prison because his intentions were not to harm or kill anyone, he was simply trying to make living. He didn't know that his drugs could have the consequence of death.

What can we do about it? Is there any action that can be taken to change this? What action has been already attempted to address this problem? Why wasn't it successful?

To solve this problem, we can simply make the public more aware of these drugs. We need to let teenagers know that just because a drug is legal, does not mean it is safe. Many of my friends do K2, which is a synthetic drugs, and think its fine because it's technically marijuana. That is wrong. It only looks like marijuana but it is actually not marijuana at all. I think the best way to begin to solve this problem is to raise awareness in parents and young teenagers so they know what they are dealing with when it comes to synthetic drugs. The action of making synthetic drugs illegal was an attempt to address this problem. But with the sneaky packaging techniques and tweaking of the chemical makeup of these dangerous drugs, this attempt is failing.

After Conference:

In what ways is this thesis and topic challenging (p.108)?

My thesis would be "Synthetic drugs are a problem because many are misinformed about whether or not synthetic drugs are safe, and because of the fact that synthetic drugs are legal and many are unaware of what synthetic drugs even are."
This thesis and topic is challenging because many teens today don't listen to the warning labels on packaging on synthetic drugs. They use false information to back up their reasoning for using drugs. They don't want to hear the harsh truth and rather believe all the lies that have been told about synthetic drugs. It will be challenging to convince readers that use synthetic drugs to agree with my thesis.

How is this thesis and topic compelling (p.108)?

This topic is compelling because it evokes the idea that synthetic drugs are a serious problem and that we should go to great lengths to prevent synthetic drugs from being sold legally.

In what ways is this thesis and topic debatable or controversial (p. 109)?

This thesis and topic is debatable or controversial because the youth today do not want to come to reality and see that synthetic drugs can kill people or permanently damage them. They continue to believe the lies that are told by the synthetic manufacturers and sellers and don't realize that those lies are being told not to ensure their health but so those making money can continue to do so.
