Project Proposal Rp

What societal problem or problems have you identified while researching your topic?

  • Most drinks containing artificial sweetener have the word "diet" on them because there is little to no calories, but ingesting these products can make people gain weight in the long run
  • regular people claim that a major sweetener, aspartame, cause cancer when it isn't proven to
  • newer artificial sweeteners, like Splenda, haven't been around long enough to know if they have negative health effects, yet people still consume them

What are the causes of this problem? Was it intentional? Are there extenuating circumstances?

  • I don't believe the word "diet" and then gaining weight was intentional because the use of artificial sweeteners was first used so people that couldn't consume a lot of sugar could still enjoy sweet things.
  • I think the belief of aspartame causing cancer came from experiments in lab rats since it caused cancer in rats (not humans). People also tend to make up myths about things that are synthesized in a lab and not natural

What can we do about it? Is there any action that can be taken to change this? What action has been already attempted to address this problem? Why wasn't it successful?

  • the most successful way to make society believe there is no problems would be to just correct someone when they are wrong and provide proof
  • if someone is told that what they think isn't correct, they are more likely to disregard the correct information and believe in the incorrect information more
