Project Proposal TJ

What societal problem or problems have you identified while researching your topic?

  • That crime is a huge problem right now in North Dakota because of the ongoing oil boom.

What are the causes of this problem? Was it intentional? Are there extenuating circumstances?

  • Lack of housing is one of the things that plays a big part in causing a lot of the crime in the oil fields. And another is the huge amount of people and the small amount of law enforcement that are there and the amount of funding that local law enforcement has to do something about it isn't enough to hire more officers to keep up with the growing population. People have a lot of money and not very many things to do on their free time, so that seems to get a lot of people into trouble. Drugs or dealing drugs, prostitution and human tariffing are just some of the problems in the oil fields.

What can we do about it? Is there any action that can be taken to change this? What action has been already attempted to address this problem? Why wasn't it successful?

  • There isn't many options for solving this problem. The main thing they need to do is to dramatically increase the police forces in the oil field region. Which they have tried in some areas but it still isn't enough. They attempted to in crease the FBI presence there but they were rotating people every few weeks so by the time the FBI agents were getting everything figured out new guys would come in and the other ones would leave. The local police were constantly having to bring new people up to speed on everything. Now they are putting up a full time FBI office in the area.

After Meeting:

Thesis- Even though the oil boom has created many jobs for Americans, crime has resulted from the sudden boom in the oil fields.

In what ways is this thesis and topic challenging (p.108)?

  • There is a lot of information about crime in North Dakota but there isn't a lot of info on exactly what is causing it and why they are having trouble fixing it. Because from what I have found out is that there isn't lack of funding in the police departments.

How is this thesis and topic compelling (p.108)?

  • Its compelling because it still is an on going problem that is affecting people and just how fast everything has changed.

In what ways is this thesis and topic debatable or controversial (p. 109)?

  • It is debatable because there are many different points of view with this topic and what could be the causes of the rising crime and the things that should be done to try and fix it.
