Proposal Essay Responses El

Explain how Edmondson responds to opposing points of view. Describe specific passages in which she counters those or concedes and refutes them.

When talking about superstores such as Walmart she refuted their claims and questioned the corporate motto's.

"The town showed irreparable scars from the hard fist of corporate power, having seemingly allowed the big box stores in during during economic hard times. They promised jobs and price lowering competition and quickly put the downtown shops out of business."

"While it may seem that the Walmart and Meijers of the world bring variety to their host towns, thereby adding to the local culture, these giants truly have the opposite effect.

Edmondson talks about how these corporate giants are destroying local culture and taking away jobs only to supply more with meager pay.

Identify her main claim and at least three supporting claims. For each of these claims, describe one piece of support she has that is linked to each claim.

I believe her main claim is that in order to preserve local culture and independence, a more rigid action must be taken in order to halt corporations from developing their stores wherever they please. Perhaps a stronger public outcry or opinion of the towns/cities in question. Or perhaps a medium between superstores and local culture.

- The superstores are not as economically helpful as they say. "They offer jobs, cheaper products, and perhaps the security that comes along with national brand recognition. However, the money grossed at these stores does not stay in the community, save the meager employee paychecks. Often, these stores offer no benefits to employees and give very little back to the community."

- Corporate superstores tend to bleed towns dry of local flavor and culture. "When control over the economic forces of small towns is taken away citizens, business owners included, people can easily forget what it means to help out locally if there is no such thing as "local."'

- It is possible to maintain a towns cultural identity with superstores present as evident in the authors description of Traverse City. "It appears that while Traverse city let in the big boys, it also nurtured the business district that formed the town…"

Edmondson uses sources throughout her argument. Which ones are the most effective? Why?
