The Author's thesis, or main claim is that the internet seems to be affecting the public's cognition poorly. He uses evidence from studies and his own personal experience to support this claim. In his own experience, he admits to having a harder time reading longer articles and books, and some of his other scholarly friends are also losing patience with reading long texts. These two pieces are evidence, they are the author's first hand experience and data gathered from other sources. The use of evidence is trying to build credibility and activating reasoning. He also uses a study that was conducted on internet users by University College London. Their findings are used as evidence by Carr, the study showed that people were skimming and moving from one site to another, with no evidence that they went back to any of the previous. This is more evidence used to build credibility and activate reasoning.

Carr also argues that while people may be reading more than any other generation, it is a different kind of reading that evokes a different kind of thinking. He uses more evidence and a verification by quoting Maryanne Wolf. She is a psychologist and author, this builds credibility in her being used as a source. Her thought is that with the Net "efficiency and immediacy are put above all else."(pg.269) This evidence is used to activate reasoning and to evoke emotion.

The internet allows for quick knowledge, we can find facts in seconds, this might be a reason for the loss of patience of reading longer text, and loss of "deep reading and thinking" (pg. 269) Nicholas Carr uses the illustration of Maryanne Wolf that "deep reading is indistinguishable from deep thinking." (pg. 269) this is support for the main claim, that the internet is changing our thought process in a negative way. He asserts, via Wolf, that people are losing deeper thinking, something associated with intelligence. With information available with the click of a button its made some stray from "deep reading/thinking". This illustration that connects thinking with "deep reading" is activating reasoning.
